By Dian Hasan | September 16, 2009
Japan is one of the world’s most densely populated countries, however, the very little public space that they’ve managed to carve out is put to very efficient use. Of course Japan is also endowed with stunning natural beauty, from the picture-postcard perfect Mount Fuji (with or without a bullet train passing in the foreground!), to Sapporo’s ski resorts, spectacular foliage, hot springs, and rugged coastline of Okinawa. but it’s the cities where one will find creative approaches to green space.
Such as the Namba Parks in Osaka, Japan’s second largest city. A testament to the need of the modern urban dweller ~ green public space. Whether on the ground, or in the sky. A modern-day version of the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylonia, perhaps?

Miyako Island, Japan. Photo: flickr member yumi
There are some images that – at first sight – just don’t seem to match our pre-conceived notion of country. An idyllic island life that has near-perfect mediterranean weather in… Japan? Well, the beauty of travel (with a big help from the internet) is to see sights from around the world through which we learn to appreciate all corners of the globe.
All travel destinations whether they make sense to our minds or not. Just like Japan, it’s not about the bright neon-lights of downtown Tokyo, or hi tech gadgets and bullet trains, or serene Temples with Mount Fuji as a backdrop. Miyako Island, is one such unique place that goes against the grain of everything you thought Japan was supposed to be.
